Travel guide

About North East

India's North East is seven states of mountains, tea and tribal culture. Our core route crosses from Assam's Brahmaputra plains over the 4,170 m Sela Pass to Tawang, home of India's largest monastery.

On the way back, Kaziranga National Park has two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinos, seen on jeep safaris (elephant-back rides run when the park offers them).

Best time
October to April. Kaziranga's central range is open November to April; Sela Pass can close briefly after heavy snow.
Ideal trip
8–9 days for Tawang and Kaziranga
Getting there
Fly into Guwahati. Tawang is two driving days away, broken at Dirang or Bomdila.
For visitors from abroad
Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). We apply for both before you travel.

How long does the permit take?+

Indian ILPs are issued online within a few days. Foreign PAPs need passport and visa copies and take 1–2 weeks; we handle the application.

Is altitude a problem?+

Tawang is at about 3,000 m and Sela Pass at 4,170 m. We overnight at Dirang (1,500 m) first to acclimatise.

Can we add Meghalaya?+

Yes. Shillong is 3 hours from Guwahati. Add 3–4 days for the classic Meghalaya loop.
