Quick answer

A 9-day North East tour from Guwahati drives to Tawang over the 4,170 m Sela Pass, with a night at Dirang to acclimatise, then ends with two Kaziranga jeep safaris. Permits are handled for you. It costs from ₹44,500 per person, and October to April is the best time.

Trip Overview

India's far north-east delivers two worlds in one trip: the Himalaya, with Sela Pass, Jaswant Garh and the 17th-century Tawang Monastery, the largest in India, and the Brahmaputra plains, where Kaziranga shelters most of the world's greater one-horned rhinos.

We climb gradually, sleeping at Dirang before Tawang, and carry oxygen. Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit and foreign nationals a Protected Area Permit, and we apply for both. Send ID copies at least three weeks ahead.
