Travel guide

About Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh holds three of India's most important journeys: the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri in Agra, the pilgrim triangle of Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi, and Lucknow's Nawabi architecture and food.

Expressways now link most of these, so a week covers more than it used to.

Best time
October to March. Prayagraj's Magh Mela is held in January–February every year.
Ideal trip
6–8 days for Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi; 2 days for Agra
Getting there
Fly into Lucknow, Varanasi or Ayodhya; Agra is easiest from Delhi by train or road.
For visitors from abroad
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Varanasi's ghats are best seen from a boat at sunrise.

    On-trip help

Can we do Agra and Varanasi together?+

Yes. Take an overnight train between them (about 10–12 hours), or travel via Delhi.

Is it suitable for elderly parents?+

Very. Our UP circuit keeps every drive to 4 hours or less and includes battery cars or wheelchairs where available.

What about the Kumbh Mela?+

Prayagraj hosts the Magh Mela every January–February, and the much larger Kumbh Melas on a 6- and 12-year cycle. We'll tell you if your dates coincide.
