Travel guide

About Rajasthan

India's largest state packs four very different cities into one road trip: pink Jaipur, lakeside Udaipur, blue Jodhpur under Mehrangarh, and golden Jaisalmer on the edge of the Thar Desert.

Six of its hill forts, including Amber, Kumbhalgarh and Jaisalmer, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between the cities you'll find stepwells, Jain temples, block-printing villages and some of the best vegetarian food in the country.

Best time
October to March. Desert nights are cold from December to February; April to June is very hot.
Ideal trip
7–10 days for the four big cities; 4–5 for Jaipur and Udaipur only
Getting there
Fly into Jaipur or Udaipur. Delhi to Jaipur is about 4.5 hours by road or by Vande Bharat or Shatabdi train.
For visitors from abroad
Jaipur's composite ticket covers Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and more for two days. Carry a scarf for Jain and Hindu temples.

Is Rajasthan good for a first India trip?+

Yes. Roads are good, stays range from heritage havelis to palaces, and it combines easily with Delhi and Agra.

Should I add Pushkar or Ranthambore?+

Pushkar fits between Jaipur and Jodhpur; Ranthambore (tigers, Oct–Jun) fits between Jaipur and Agra. Each needs 2 nights.

How long are the drives?+

Jaipur–Udaipur ~395 km, Udaipur–Jodhpur ~250 km, Jodhpur–Jaisalmer ~285 km. Expect 5–7 hours each.
