Travel guide

About Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has one of India's richest collections of great temples still in daily worship, from the Pallava shore temples of Mahabalipuram to the Chola giants of Thanjavur and the towering gopurams of Madurai's Meenakshi Amman.

Between the temples there's Pondicherry's French quarter, Kanchipuram silk looms, Chettinad mansions and a long coast of quiet beaches.

Best time
December to February is ideal. October to early December brings the north-east monsoon; April to June is hot.
Ideal trip
8–10 days for the full temple trail; 3 days for Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram
Getting there
Fly into Chennai (international) and out of Madurai or Tiruchirappalli to avoid backtracking.
For visitors from abroad
Shoes come off at every temple entrance; shoulders and knees should be covered. Some inner sanctums are open to Hindus only.

Can non-Hindus enter the temples?+

Yes, into most temple complexes. A few inner sanctums are restricted; signs make it clear.

December to February is warm but pleasant (around 28–30 °C). Plan temples early morning and late afternoon.

How do we get between towns?+

By private cab. Chennai–Pondicherry is about 3.5 hours; Thanjavur–Madurai about 4 hours.
