Travel guide

About Varanasi

Kashi, Banaras, Varanasi: one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, built along 84 ghats on the Ganga. Mornings are for boat rides and bathers, evenings for the Ganga aarti.

Ten kilometres away, Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his first sermon. The city is also famous for silk weaving, classical music and some of India's best street food.

Best time
October to March. Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima, usually November) lights every ghat with diyas.
Ideal trip
3–4 days
Getting there
Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport has flights from most Indian cities. Vande Bharat trains run from Delhi in about 8 hours.
For visitors from abroad
Photography at the burning ghats (Manikarnika, Harishchandra) is not appropriate. Sarnath's museum is closed on Fridays.

Is Varanasi overwhelming?+

It can be. A local guide for the first morning makes all the difference, and we pick quiet stays near the ghats.

How do I get a Kashi Vishwanath darshan?+

General queues move faster early morning. Sugam darshan and aarti tickets can be booked online on the temple trust website.

When is Dev Deepawali?+

On Kartik Purnima, 15 days after Diwali. Boats and riverside rooms sell out months ahead.
