Quick answer
A 4-day Thanjavur tour from Trichy covers all three UNESCO Great Living Chola Temples (Brihadeeswarar, Airavatesvara and Gangaikonda Cholapuram), plus Srirangam, Kumbakonam and the Swamimalai bronze workshops. It costs from ₹16,500 per person. November to February is the best time.
Trip Overview
Rajaraja Chola I completed the Brihadeeswarar Temple in 1010 CE, and its 66-metre tower is still in daily worship a thousand years later. With the temples at Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram it forms UNESCO's Great Living Chola Temples, and this loop from Trichy airport reaches all three in four days.
You also see Srirangam, India's largest functioning Hindu temple complex, and watch lost-wax bronze casting at Swamimalai. We visit the Big Temple twice, at opening and again at dusk when the granite glows gold, and keep every drive under two and a half hours.
