Travel guide

About Kerala

God's Own Country moves from Kochi's Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish history up into Munnar's tea estates, across to Thekkady's spice gardens and Periyar forest, and down to Alleppey's backwaters.

Add Kathakali, Ayurveda and some of India's best seafood, and it's one of India's most popular honeymoon and family trips.

Best time
September to March. June to August is monsoon, which is the Ayurveda season and good value.
Ideal trip
6–8 days
Getting there
Fly into Kochi; leave from Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram.
For visitors from abroad
Eravikulam National Park (Munnar) usually closes in February–March for Nilgiri tahr calving. Houseboats check in around noon and out around 9 am.

    On-trip help

Is a houseboat night worth it?+

Yes, for one night. Choose a private boat and ask for the quieter routes through the Kuttanad canals.

Can we add a beach?+

Add 2 nights at Marari or Varkala at the end of the trip.

Is Kerala good in monsoon?+

For Ayurveda and green landscapes, yes. Some outdoor activities stop and roads to Munnar can slow down.
