Shimla, popularly known as the “Queen of Hills” or “Simla”’. Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and it is the largest city of Himachal Pradesh. It is the chief commercial, cultural and educational centre of Himachal Pradesh. The Queen of Hills is located in the southwest of the Himalayas with the height of 2206 metres. Brief History

In the 18th century, the only civilization in Shimla was Jakhoo temple and few houses. Shimla is also known as Simla, named after a Hindu goddess, Shyamala Devi, an epitome of Kaali. In 1806, Shimla was captured by Bhimsen Thapa of Nepal. From 1814-1816, The British East India Company took control of the territory.

In 1832, the first political meeting between the governor-general Lord William Bentinck and the entries of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was held in Shimla. Under British rule in 1864, Shimla was declared as the summer capital of India due to its immense beauty. As summer capital, many political meetings were hosted by Shimla. This includes Simla Accord 1914, Simla Conference 1945 etc.

After that, the town was under Nawab Kumar Ghosal of bally. After Independence, Shimla became the capital of Punjab and then later it became the capital of Himachal Pradesh. In 1830, the city became the centre for theatre art and exhibition.

How to Reach Shimla?

Shimla is the most visited and easily accessible city of India. You can visit Shimla via air, road and train.

By Air

You can take a flight to Shimla airport, Jubbarhatti which is about 23Km from the city. It is the closest airport to the city. The flights are available from Delhi and Chandigarh.

There are regular flights to Shimla from Delhi and Chandigarh. There are five flights available per week from Delhi. You can book your private cab or local taxi from the Shimla airport to reach your destination. It takes 1 hour and 10min.

By Road

Taking a road trip to shimla is a mesmerising idea in itself. You can enjoy the scenes & feel the magic through the journey. The highways are well maintained & well connected to the city. There are three routes you can take by CAR:

The Ambala Route
  • It is the smallest route and takes 7-8 hours via NH-44, NH-152 & NH-5.
The Yamunanagar Route
  • It takes 10 to 11 hours. Via NH-44 & NH-5.
The Dehradun Route

It takes 12 to 13 hours via NH-334 & NH-7.

By Bus

Bus services are also available to Shimla from Delhi. National highways, NH-1 and NH-22 lead to Shimla from New Delhi. You can get luxury buses from ISBT Kashmiri gate. The buses started from evening in Delhi and took roughly 8 to 9 hours.

By Train

There is no direct train available from Delhi to Shimla. So you can travel from Delhi to Shimla via Delhi – Kalka railway line and then Kalka – Shimla railway line. The Kalka railway station is the nearest railway station connecting Shimla to its neighbouring cities. The distance is 96 km.

Shimla Toy Train

The Shimla toy train was declared as a heritage site in 2007 by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh. In 2008, it was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It gives you a scenic view of deodar trees, whitish mountains, tropical views and what not! It was built in 1903.

This Kalka-Shimla toy train ride will give you the most incredible experience, covering 102 tunnels, 864 bridges, and 919 stunning curves. The train, Kalka-Shatabdi, leaves early in the morning.

It is done ten days before beginning the festival. People make clay statues of Lord Shiva & Parvati and pray for soil fertility & greenery of fields.

Winter Carnival

Jakhoo Temple

Jakhoo Temple is located at the highest peak of Shimla with the height of 8000 feet above the sea level. This temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. People believe that Lord Hanuman rested at this temple for a while on his way searching for Sanjivani Booti for Lakshmana.

Kali bari Temple

Bhimakali Temple
