Once in a while, we all crave for a trip that requires us to step outside of our comfort zones. Particularly in 2021, as the world begins its recovery from the deadly Covid-19 virus, adventure tourism has become a whole new concern. Successful adventure tourism requires thorough planning and some very essential items that come in handy, whether you are going on a long road trip or for a trek in the mountains.

In this blog, we will discuss 10 essential items that we should carry for adventure tourism, keeping in mind the current pandemic situation.

Must Carry Items for Adventure Tourism

Travel Guide/Map

Travel Map

One of the most essential items to carry for your adventure travel is your travel guide or map. We often forget to carry one because we are accustomed to using google maps and GPS. But network facilities may not work in many places so it is wise to carry a hard copy of the travel map to stay right on track. Imagine being stranded in the middle of nowhere with no network connection and no definite sense of direction. Yeah, that doesn’t sound like much fun, does it?

Water

Staying hydrated is closely linked to staying healthy and good health is extremely important if you want to make the most of an adventure. Imagine walking or hiking for hours without a single drop of water. That’s right, you can’t! So make sure to carry sufficient water for your trip.

Light Luggage

An adventure is not your regular trip where you have the luxury to stuff just about anything in your bag. Adventure travellers carry only the most essential things they need to live comfortably through the trip. A light suitcase containing light and comfortable clothes, moisturizers, an umbrella, basic medicines and toiletries is all you need to be adventure-ready!

In addition, a small backpack is advisable to carry small items like your phone, camera, water bottle and some light snacks. While the luggage should be light, but you should also make sure that you do not leave out any of the essential items.

Snacks

While on an adventure trip, you may not always find places to eat at your convenience. So it is best that you carry some light snacks in your backpack. These may include protein bars, dry fruits and nuts, biscuits and so on.

Avoid carrying junk food like chips as they burn easily and may even cause health discomfort. While going for a mountain adventure, If you carry a small stove or kettle, you can (rather should) also pack some instant noodles. Slurping hot and spicy noodles in the cold mountains is truly a dream, isn’t it?

Camera

Action Camera

The memories you create on your adventure trip stays with you forever. And what is more effective in capturing your precious memories than a good quality camera? For adventure trips such as hiking, scuba diving or rafting, carrying a GoPro camera is much more efficient. GoPro cameras are lightweight and easy to carry, unlike DSLR cameras.

Power banks/Chargers

This is one thing that most of us tend to forget at the last moment. Chargers, preferably power banks, are essential to carry while going for an adventure to ensure that our phones remain active throughout the journey. How else do you plan to upload your travel posts on social media if your phone battery dies out?

Valid IDs

I recently went on a road trip to Shillong, and I had to show my ID and vaccine certificate at the Umling checkpoint as well as at the place where I stayed. Many states have made it compulsory for travellers to carry their vaccine certificates. A valid identification card, along with the vaccine certification is mandatory to carry for any travellers in 2021. If you do not carry your vaccine certificate, you may be asked to take an RT-PCR test and stay in quarantine until the results come out. Better to be safe than sorry, right? So don’t forget to carry these necessary items!

Sunglasses/Raincoats

If you are looking for a beach trip, carry a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. Lazing on the beach with the sun burning your eyes will be extremely uncomfortable. You should also carry sunscreen (50+ SPF) to avoid getting tanned in the tropical heat. For your trip to the mountains, carry a raincoat as rainfall is quite common in high altitude areas. You can also have an umbrella, but it’s easier to travel around in a light raincoat than with an umbrella.

Basic safety kit

Adventure travel has many risks so it’s best that you remain prepared. Minor injuries are quite common whether you go on a beach adventure or a trek in the mountains. For minor cuts and burns, carry antiseptics and band-aids. In addition, always carry some basic medicines like Vitamin tablets, paracetamol and others, to remain fully healthy throughout the trip.

First Aid Box

Particularly in high altitude areas, you might get motion sickness (as I do), so you must carry personal medicines to suit your needs. Further, if you have other issues like asthma, the mountains may prove to be quite troublesome for you. Be prepared at any cost if you want to avoid a short trip to the doctor in the middle of your adventure.

Toiletry & Sanitary Products

Most people seem to think that being on an adventure means that we have to compromise with our hygiene. But that’s not necessarily the case. Proper hygiene and sanitation is crucial no matter where you go or how you live. So while going for an adventurous trip, carry soaps, sanitary products (for women) and most importantly, hand sanitisers! Particularly, if you are travelling in 2021, wear a mask at all times to avoid catching and spreading of the covid-19 virus.
