Quick Answer

Plan two nights in Ayodhya. Arrive by air (Ayodhya airport), train (Ayodhya Dham Junction) or road from Lucknow (about 3 hours). Visit Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan on day one with the evening Saryu aarti, then do Ram Mandir darshan early the next morning. Phones and bags aren't allowed inside, so use the free lockers.

Key Takeaways

  • Traditionally, devotees visit Hanuman Garhi before Ram Lalla.
  • Early-morning darshan has the shortest queues; festivals and weekends are busiest.
  • Phones, bags, belts and electronics stay in the lockers.
  • Wheelchairs are available at the Ram Mandir. Ask at the entry or pre-arrange through your planner.

Since the Ram Mandir opened in January 2024, Ayodhya has become one of India's most-visited pilgrim towns, and one of the most-requested trips from our travellers' parents.

The town has changed fast, with a new airport, railway station, riverfront and roads. Here's how to plan a calm, comfortable visit.

1. How Do You Get to Ayodhya?

By air, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport has direct flights from several major cities. By train, Ayodhya Dham Junction has direct services from Delhi and other cities. By road, Lucknow is about 135 km (2.5–3 hours) away and Varanasi about 210 km (4 hours).

If flights to Ayodhya are expensive on your dates, flying into Lucknow and driving is often cheaper.

2. In What Order Should You Visit the Temples?

Pilgrims at a temple in Ayodhya

By tradition, pilgrims first seek Hanuman ji's blessing at Hanuman Garhi, a hilltop temple reached by 76 steps. Next is Kanak Bhawan, the 'golden palace' associated with Sita and Ram, and Dashrath Mahal nearby.

Keep the Ram Mandir for the next morning, when you're rested and the queues are shorter. End each day at the Saryu aarti at Ram ki Paidi or Naya Ghat.

A two-day order

  • Day 1: Hanuman Garhi → Kanak Bhawan → Dashrath Mahal → Saryu aarti
  • Day 2: Ram Mandir (early) → Nageshwarnath → Guptar Ghat
  • Day 3: Bharat Kund, Nandigram → depart

3. What Can't You Carry Into the Ram Mandir?

Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, bags, purses, belts and electronic items are not allowed inside. Free lockers and a shoe counter are provided near the entry. Carry only what you need: some cash for offerings and your ID.

Wear modest, comfortable clothing and socks; marble floors can be hot or cold depending on the season.

4. How Do You Plan Darshan With Elderly Parents?

Choose a hotel within a short drive of the temple zone, with a lift. Plan one major visit per half-day, with a rest in the afternoon. Wheelchairs are available at the temple, and the trust has made accessible routes. Ask us to arrange a helper.

Aarti passes are issued free by the temple trust in limited numbers, online and on site. Apply as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Ram Mandir darshan take?+

Usually 1–2 hours including security and lockers. It can take much longer on festivals and long weekends.

Is one day enough for Ayodhya?+

One full day covers the main temples, but two nights is far more comfortable, especially with parents.

Can we combine Ayodhya with Varanasi and Prayagraj?+

Yes. Our 7-day UP Spiritual Circuit links all three with drives of under 4 hours.
